Why Use XPS to PDF Converter?

XPS (XML Paper Specification) is a document format developed by Microsoft, but it is not as widely supported as PDF. Many devices and applications cannot open XPS files without specific software.

A XPS to PDF converter helps solve this compatibility issue by converting the document into a format that works across nearly all platforms.

After conversion, the file becomes easier to share, print, and store without worrying about software limitations. Converting XPS to PDF ensures that documents remain accessible and consistent across devices and operating systems.

Features

Everything in One XPS to PDF Converter

🔷
True Vector Conversion
XPS vector paths are converted to PDF vector paths — not rasterised bitmaps. Text, shapes, and curves stay sharp at any zoom level.
🔤
Font Embedding
All fonts referenced in the XPS are extracted and embedded in the output PDF, ensuring identical text rendering on any device without the original fonts installed.
🔗
Hyperlink Preservation
Internal and external hyperlinks defined in the XPS are mapped to active PDF links — document navigation and web references remain fully clickable.
📋
Page Range Selection
Convert only the pages you need — specify a From/To range to extract a section or chapter from a large XPS document without processing the whole file.
📦
Batch Conversion
Queue multiple XPS and OXPS files and convert them in one pass — each file produces a separate PDF, all available in a single ZIP download.
🗄️
PDF/A Archival Output
Choose PDF/A-1b for long-term archival — the output meets ISO 19005-1 requirements for document preservation with all fonts and colour profiles embedded.
🔒
Optional Encryption
Add password protection to the output PDF — restrict opening, printing, or copying using standard 128-bit AES PDF encryption.
💨
Fast & Accurate
XPS pages are parsed and rendered server-side with high fidelity. Typical multi-page documents convert in under 10 seconds — complex technical drawings included.
PDF Version Reference

Choosing the Right PDF Version

The PDF version controls which features are available in the output file and which viewers can open it. For general use, PDF 1.7 is the safest choice — it is supported by every PDF viewer released in the past 15 years.

Use Cases

When to Convert XPS to PDF

🌍
Cross-Platform Sharing
Share XPS documents with users on macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS where XPS viewers are unavailable. PDF opens natively on every platform.
🖨️
Print Spool Recovery
Windows print spooler and XPS Document Writer output .xps files. Convert these to PDF for printing, archiving, or sharing outside the Windows ecosystem.
🏛️
Archival & Compliance
Legal, financial, and government workflows frequently require PDF/A archival format. Convert XPS records to PDF/A-1b for long-term compliance storage.
📧
Email Attachments
Most email clients and recipients cannot open XPS files. Convert to PDF before sending to ensure the document is accessible without any software installation.
🔍
Document Search
PDF is indexed by desktop search tools, SharePoint, and document management systems. Convert XPS files to PDF to make their content searchable and indexable.
⚖️
Legal Submissions
Courts, regulators, and e-discovery platforms universally require PDF. Convert XPS evidence documents, invoices, or records to PDF for legal submission.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an XPS file and where do they come from?
XPS (XML Paper Specification) is Microsoft's fixed-layout document format, introduced with Windows Vista in 2007. XPS files are most commonly generated by the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" virtual printer — when you print any document on Windows and select this printer, you get an .xps file. Some Windows applications also export XPS directly. OXPS is the updated Open XPS format introduced in Windows 8, with minor structural improvements but the same fundamental approach.
Is the PDF output vector or rasterised?
The output is true vector PDF. XPS stores page content as XAML-based vector instructions — paths, glyphs, gradients, and images. Our converter maps these directly to their PDF equivalents: PDF path operators, font glyph streams, and image XObjects. Text remains as selectable, searchable text in the output PDF. Images embedded in the XPS are re-embedded in the PDF at their original resolution.
Will the output look exactly like the original XPS?
For the vast majority of XPS files — office documents, invoices, print spooler output — the output PDF is visually identical to the XPS. Edge cases include documents using XPS-specific colour profiles (SCRGB or ICC-tagged) which are converted to sRGB, and documents using fonts that are subsetted in ways that don't map cleanly to standard PDF font embedding. In practice, these affect fewer than 1% of real-world XPS files.
Can I convert multi-document XPS (MXDC) files?
Standard XPS files contain one document per package. The Microsoft XPS Document Converter (MXDC) sometimes produces packages with multiple FixedDocument elements. This converter handles such files correctly — each FixedDocument is treated as a document section and its pages are included sequentially in the output PDF.
Is there a page count or file size limit?
XPS files up to 200 MB and up to 500 pages are supported. XPS files generated by Windows print spooler are typically under 5 MB and well within these limits. For very large engineering or architectural XPS documents, use the page range selector to convert in segments if needed.
Are my XPS files stored on your servers?
Files are uploaded over HTTPS and processed server-side. Both the input XPS and output PDF are deleted from our infrastructure immediately after your download session ends (within 30 minutes). We do not retain, index, or access any document content.
